angels of the silences

Today I went into the medieval church of All Saints, North Street for some stained glass reconnaissance, as I have an essay due date approaching. The church has amazing medieval glass windows, and I'll plan to show them in detail in a later post.

But for now, I'll leave you with some images of the chancel and its gorgeous ceiling, which dates to the fifteenth century. The hammerbeams depict angels, all holding various musical instruments and religious symbols. I have a weakness for polychrome, and I just adore these.

I adore these carvings...

This guy is covered in golden feathers, which almost gives the effect of gold armour. I think it would make an amazing jumpsuit.

He holds a crown.

And he a harp.

And another musical instrument -- a lute, perhaps?

I love this one. I realised that he actually is bearing a soul to heaven in a napkin, whatever that means.

This guy is a little more portly than the others!

And this one has fabulous flowy golden hair.

The end.
xx
