the ditmars tale of wonders (das dietmarsische lügenmärchen)

First stop: Cologne/Köln, pour la cathédrale.

How fitting that we Yorkies began our German
invasion with a visit to the only Gothic cathedral
in Northern Europe bigger than York Minster.

It is impossibly tall, and right in the middle of the city.

So it's difficult to get a picture of the whole thing.

The square in front of the cathedral is bustling.

So many different people.

Cologne Cathedral has always been one of the wonders of my world.

So how incredible it was to finally see it.

Very dark and crowded inside.

The cathedral was begun in the thirteenth century,
to house the "relics" of the three Magi -- still there today.

Cathedrals in my heart.

A cathedral wedding.

What we were there for.

Coloured stained glass cathedral.

Confines a past that won't let you go.

The amazing Shrine of the Jeweled Madonna,
covered in jewels and other ex-votos of the past.

I usually hate modern stained glass, but
Gerhard Richter's Symphony of Light (2007), I like.
The pixelated effect is abstract and simple,
and lets the tracery really shine.

We went up to the triforium to get a closer look.
NBD.

Danae and the Richter window.

The view from above.

The best thing about the Richter window...

Views through the exterior sculpture and over the city.

Such pretty colours.

Such a pretty city.

Life in Technicolor.

Juss chillin' in the triforium.

Everyone standing on the suspended scaffolding bridge, eek !

Highest views over a grey Cologne.

And cathedral exterior.

Such great heights.

A spiral staircase in the roof.

Back to earth & a bunch of bananas.

And a few Cologne shop fronts I liked.

German Souvenirs.

Fairy Tales Are True.
