River Wear meandering through the town.
An eleventh-century castle and a Norman cathedral.
Several bridges connect the town.
Walk the windy streets.
Go anywhere but home.
'Cause I'm looking for the secrets that only cobblestones hold.
Only the cobblestones know.
Cathedrals in my heart.
"Grey towers of Durham
Yet well I love thy mixed and massive piles
Half church of God, half castle 'gainst the Scot
And long to roam those venerable aisles
With records stored of deeds long since forgot."
~ Sir Walter Scott

This thing dates to 1093 !
It was built to house the relics of St. Cuthbert.
According to the legend, the monks of Lindisfarne
were forced to flee with the relics of Cuthbert, to
avoid the Vikings. They wandered around without
a place to house the relics for a few hundred years.
Then they followed two milkmaids who were searching
for a dun cow. Cheeky monks. They ended up in Durham
because Cuthbert's coffin suddenly became immovable.
So they built the cathedral around it. That's the story anyway.

Inside. No photos allowed, but I managed to
steal a few before being shouted at by a reverend.

Tomb of Bishop Thomas Langley of Durham, 1437.
Bede (Venerable).
Organ case.
Looking down nave.
Amazing Neville tomb. Then I got caught with my camera.
In the graveyard. Of course.
Dog on grave.
View from the cathedral across the river ravine.
Some interesting plaques etc. in the precincts...
The castle was closed. UNACCEPTABLE.
Leaving the precincts.
The fog was cray.
Walking down Dun Cow Lane.
North of England way...
Cross the river.
To take a ravine walk.
