LDN

I needed London. I really needed it. A day in my favourite city in the entire world, a day away from stress over my summer placement plans. To quote The Heart of Me: "Some time in London will cheer you up."

My classmate Lizzy and I took advantage of cheap tickets from the history of art department to spend a day in the best city. Our main goal was to see the Jan Gossaert's Renaissance exhibition at the National Gallery, which was really good. Unfortunately no pictures allowed inside, but here are a few random shots from a whirlwind day, which culminated in running full speed through the London Underground trying to make our evening train back to York.
We made it.

St. Martin in the Fields,
from the National Gallery.

Trafalgar Square.

You might laugh, you might frown
Walkin' round London town.

Oh, that's just Big Ben. NBD.

Tick tock tick tock.

Life, yeah that's city life.

When you look with your eyes
Everything seems nice.

Westminster Abbey.
My favourite place in all of London.
Sadly we didn't realise they CLOSE at 3:30.
Seriously?!?!
Luckily I have been before.
It brought me to tears.
And I WILL go back inside again.

Tympanum.

More of the Abbey exterior.

We did make it into St. Margaret's Church,
adjacent to the Abbey.

Porch ceiling.

Interior.

East window dates to c. 1526,
and was made in Flanders.

The donor figures are of my man Henry VIII...

And Katharine of Aragon.
It's unusual that this scheme survives with the two of
them together, because of the whole divorce thing.

Palace of Westminster.

The Sovereign's Entrance.

And speaking of Queen Liz, here's her house. NBD.

I love everything about London.
Even the street signs, so iconic, so simple.

Lambeth Palace, home of the Archbishop of Canterbury.

We wandered into the adjacent Garden Museum
in a redundant church, where I got my tomb fix for the day.

Cemeteries of London.

Death And All His Friends.
(Can you tell I listened to Coldplay on the train ride down?
Everyone should have the opportunity to take a train from
York to London and listen to the last three Coldplay albums
all the way through whilst watching the English countryside.)

An alligator on this tomb?

Terrifying birds in St. James's Park.

It doesn't get me down and I feel OK
Cause the sights that I'm seeing are priceless.

Colours of the park.

Sunset at St. James's.

La Tamise.

Sun is in the sky
Oh why, oh why
Would I wanna be anywhere else?
xx

  1. This means I, too, must train from York to London and listen to the Coldplay albums.
