the peasant in heaven (das bürli im himmel)

A Nuremberg morning spent on a private tour of
the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, which has
The Most Amazing Medieval Art Collection, like OMG y'all.

Walking through the city to the museum.

Bratwurst.

Green Earth.

Brie outside the museum.

Ivo entering the Germanisches Nationalmuseum.

Happy stained glassers on a private museum tour.

Focusing on the sg.

But there are many amazing objects of all media.

Some gallery shots.

And a sampling of objects I liked...

Christ ridin' on an ass.

A Schutzmantelmadonna !

Nuremberg is basically polychrome heaven.

No arms !

Heads on plates.

We all loved this sculpture of the Annunciation...

If you look closely, you can see Christ and John the Baptist
depicted in the wombs of Mary and Elizabeth.

Cool reliquaries.

I <3 medieval art.

Reliquary altarpiece -- all the little boxes around
the central crucifixion panel were meant to hold relics.

Ugly Renaissance Babies.

Portable reliquary altar with saint border.

A Nuremberg patrician family record of pilgrimages.

Upstairs and brighter blues.

Golden ship.

Stained glass monkeys.

Church pew plaques.

Medieval beggars' badges.
Being a beggar was an official profession in Nuremberg.

Stained glass roundel featuring portraits of
the Hapsburg Holy Roman Emperors.

I am always drawn to medieval jewellery.

Such amazing survivals.

I can't even tell you how badly I need a replica of this.

Amazing altarpiece.

Detail; so many Renaissance babies in this museum.

Maxin' and relaxin'.

Room after room of medieval treasures.

OH HEY LUCAS CRANACH THE ELDER.

Cranach again.

Heads on plates.

Why then, the world's mine oyster.
xx

    1. Glad you enjoyed it! The heads on plates represent the severed head of John the Baptist. Definitely weird, but such amazing objects!
